From an *cough* objective view, they seem to have a really distinct editorial style, with lot’s of playful and colourful type, retro fonts and illustrations that boost the content. I enjoyed my time spent, but I had a few problems with the series.

1. Dexter is annoying (in his kind of drawling, autistic way) and only really lights up and is actually funny just before he kills someone.

2. His wife Rita is the plainest, most annoying soccer mom i’ve ever witnessed on tv. The only dialogue she has is nagging, and she’s either valium happy, or crazy stressed and depressed. No emotional investment.

3. The rest of the characters are stereotypical cops, Batista played by David Zayas is a shadow of his inmate killing spick don in OZ, and now wears outrageous hawaiin shirts. Everyone else is unmemorable apart from Deb who is probably the most likeable in her goofy way.

4. Every episode get more and more similar. Dexter tries to kill someone and mucks it up, get in an argument with his ghost dad (who’s always hanging out with him), gets in a messaging fight with his wife, leaves work really early all the time even though he’s needed for a case, and then finally brutally murders someone and it goes back to normal. It seems Dexter is happiest when he’s drinking a cold brewsky and dumping a dead body off his boat at night.

Dexter (Seasons 2-4) 2/5

POGO! I thought stencil would get big but i don’t think thats going to happen. I’m not going to post a whole lot because you only need to pick up a copy of Computer Arts too see that everyone is having a go. If you look through some of the ADC Young Guns 7, most of those designers have had awarded work that looked at type in new and interesting ways. I’m still so so about it, I can really appreciate completely hand rendered typography and really dense shit, but i much prefer classical, cleaner styles, especially in print. Too many different executions loose the ‘single voice’ of your work. That said, I love this donut and coffee ampersand by Dan Beckenmeyer.

I haven’t been posting final work here for a long while...

I haven’t been posting final work here for a long while now, kinda saving it all for my end of year folio, but here’s a little lo rez of my Richard Pratt “Shred Everything” poster due in tommorow. I’m really happy with how it’s turned out for a few reasons. 1. I knew from the start what I wanted to make. 2. I had enough time to execute it (lazer cut stencil, get enough materials and time to do the shoot), 3. The print went well (always a nice surprise).

Keep tuned for a proper ‘designer holding a poster’ photo on my cargo.

Photo

When people talk about ‘great magazine covers’,...

When people talk about ‘great magazine covers’, George Lois usually comes to mind and his hot streak in the ’60s, with covers like this, and this. But after listening to an episode of NPR, apparently George Lois was full of sh*t most the time. Being an adman he could talk his way out of paper bag so that’s no surprise (but worth listening). Anyway, I prefer to look back to the ’40s when a young Paul Rand was art directing over there.

Also I think I want to work for either US GQ or US Wired. What’s that ‘Secret’ thing where something you want manifests..?
