I haven’t been posting final work here for a long while now, kinda saving it all for my end of year folio, but here’s a little lo rez of my Richard Pratt “Shred Everything” poster due in tommorow. I’m really happy with how it’s turned out for a few reasons. 1. I knew from the start what I wanted to make. 2. I had enough time to execute it (lazer cut stencil, get enough materials and time to do the shoot), 3. The print went well (always a nice surprise).
Keep tuned for a proper ‘designer holding a poster’ photo on my cargo.
A few things that will be loaded onto my folio when I finish and have time (photographed well).
A few photography projects.
The last 3 Esperanto’s + promotional gear, business cards etc.
Re-designed N2 poster.
MIJF double sided poster.
The Hungry Monster (Pizza restaurant) signage, and hopefully menus to come.
Metlink 7 years book (designed under Latitude group).
A few more ANZ ads.
a few things about the upcoming esperanto.
my two feature colours (apart from black), will be ‘purple haze’ and ‘mao dynasty red’. These will crop up as gradients in thumbnail photos, my little illustrations and a few major holding shapes, apart from that I won’t use them in headings or anywhere else.
Also-lot’s more large photos, giving articles more room to breathe, wired-esque shapes and lines leading your eyes around, and about 4 new grids, rather than the old 3 column deal. Utopia will be my subheading, feature font is Caslon Graphique, but quite a few features have custom type treatments. Feel is ‘classy, american, solid & detailed.’
As far as content goes, there’s nothing groundbreaking, a few how to’s, more reviews, and a bit of ‘local travel’ rather than ‘spiritual experience’ stuff. We’ve taken a step back after the sex issue because it causes so much turmoil. Also no more fake ads (nike & clearasil) because we don’t want to upset Converse, and also why give them adspace for free?
Yup that’s about it. Workload finally starting to decrease…..
When I start out doing the layout, I’ll spend heaps of time on the first article. New grids, style guides, photography style etc, because as more articles come in, that first layout will be the basis to their designs. My ‘Header’ font which changes each issue will be Caslon Graphique, a font popular in the 70’s, but unlike Octopuss (the last feature font), it has a little class! You’ll probably recognize it from Readings. The design will be quite a bit more reserved and classy, and way more focus on photography and injecting a bit more white space into the page. For the sections or ‘regulars’, i”l have an actuall system which will tie them together and pull readers through the book. A little box that will hang off the top margin, rather than invade the space of the page beneath it…
Proofing issue 2 of Esperanto today, full colour spreads, marking it up. There’s not many problems which is good just a few ttypos and some balance issues. The last few days I’ve just been grinding this thing out: it goes to the printer on the 6th..
I’d say it’s a massive step up from the first issue as well, better articles, I’ve experimented a bit more with the layout, and there’s a more cohesive style.
I’ve tried to stick with black white and red for my main colours. All my headers are set in Octopuss, a cheeky 70’s display face that a lot of skin mags used to use back then. Plantin is my workhorse for everything else (sub headings, and body).
I also switched up the background colours for pages and reversed out the text. Not exactly re-inventing the wheel here, but just adds a lot of contrast, whereas my first issue I left it white and it got a bit bland…anyway im boring myself here
btw also as of today im getting paid to do this!!! finally!! and i move out next wed!!!
Happy Easter!
Printing my cd design today. My first go at 100% non english design! Also, you may have seen the link on the header; my folio is up and fully functional at joshclement.com/folio!
It’s hosted by Cargo Collective, and this means I’m ditching my previous (half assed) efforts to show my work on flickr and behance. I’ve put some of my projects up from last year so far, but I’ll put up my work for Mark and Latitude in the coming weeks. laterzzzzz
Photoshoot! When I say ‘Photoshoot’ I mean me taking photos of a mate (pictured in tux). It’s for a re-imagined book cover for Oscar Wilde’s infamous ‘Picture of Dorian Grey’. It also involves mince meat… More to come.

plane to tokyo

me after 15 hours of transit

printed copy of esperanto
Today I checked out the printed magazine. It’s printed on coated stock (which I didn’t want), but everything else looks fine. (minus a few typos) even the layout is ok, and i never printed proofs which is a massive no no in design. next issue will be way easier to make with this under my belt.
1. It may be slightly less wide - i measured a magazine in japan that was 250mm x 18mm and it just felt better+ i wont need to crop ads as much.
2. if i can get more ads and content it will be a bit thicker+more to read
3. Order less! Although this order was significantly less than last years mag, I think I could get away with 1000 copies for Caulfield. We’ll see. (people pass them around, leave them lying around.) This will mean an easier budget for us as well.
That’s about it. I hope people like it and want to put their own content in it. One day I want to put this motherfucker in an I-Pad!
Last page to fill the mag….(the name for the feature was Trading places-so i pirated like the animal house one)
ITS FINISHED»»»»>cue relief.
Time for Tokyo; may or may not come back.
last feature dropped into the mag today. and it was an exclusive with boys noize! i got a buttload of work for Esperanto, Latitude and MARK, all on back burner, I’m hoping to properly update my folio, and ill put that up. 4 days till tokyo, and ive got to move out of home, and get really drunk at a housewarming (i can predict into the future)…
