Jon Contino Still on the dusty, hand drawn, anchors ahoy tip, which is fine because like Caleb & Co, he’s doing it well, and with his own personal style injected.
You’ve noticed anchors have been huge over the past 12 months right? What’s that about? Didn’t thye used to be a (literally) gay tattoo at some point?

Splash!

Although it’s not Lonestar, it’s a very similar style, and a striking Canadian identity. (Trend alert!). How would you describe this typographically? Extended slab serif? I love that horse shoe C, classy..

I don’t think I’ve ever seen the Photoshop transparent background printed before. It’s visually striking because it’s something you’re not meant to see, like the cs toolbar or ingredients for a sausage roll. It’s also cool for me because I use Photoshop. 95% of the world doesn’t (is that right?), so maybe it doesn’t work.
Then there’s this non functioning 3D thing happening. 3D has arrived, and is now lurking around without much purpose. This is all style, and looks alright mainly because the figures are cut out, and they pop, if this photo had a background it would look more of a mess.
Finally: the stacked mountain collage. How many more mountain collages can be pulled off with a serious face?

This was over at the Urban Outfitters site.
I’m into their new logo (I don’t know if it’s new, or if they change it often). It’s definitely the style du jour

How is this warped little banner the link to a new style? I don’t know, but I feel like it is. Joel Evey, a designer from Philly really exemplifies this visual direction.

Lonestar: up and coming typeface (in popularity, but it’s been around for a while). Expect to see it more with html 5, web fonts etc. Oh ignore all the cowboy shit, including it’s stupid name.
Frank Chimero does it well over at the Atlantis World Fair.

Easily the most popular, breakthrough font of 2010. If you look for it, you’ll see it everywhere. I think it’s popularity lay in that it was a high quality free font (three weights) and it was unusually shaped, kinda half serif that looked like bent pipe.

I’ve given trends a miss for a while, and since they’re so mercurial in the design world I don’t think it matters so much. These are just a few recent albums I’ve copped over the last few months. Notice the recurring motif?
